Kadin Tiu has been exploring line, movement and color since her early beginnings both as a photographer and as an artist. Her affinity for trying to understand how we perceive and how we interpret what we perceive created a longstanding journey of capturing, unfolding and recreating.

A break is an interruption of continuity or uniformity. A resistance to a rule of movement. It is a fold in that it introduces a new state, a change and a new direction. It is an alteration of an expected state or flow.

A fold is a redirection of an existing plane. An intermingling of points wherein an expected movement is rearranged. It is breaking uniformity by interrupting continuity. To fold something is to change its state by introducing a new direction. It is an alteration of an expected state or flow.

A line is an introduction of space. It is an interjection between two points. An introduction of movement. It is a direction given to what once was a non existent state. It is a alteration of an expected state or flow.

What once was flat no longer is. What once was expected no longer is. What once was the same no longer is. Movement is restricted, redirected and interrupted. The space that lies between two points is now interrupted. The two points remain but reside in separate but undeniably connected states. An alteration of an expected state creates a new flow, a new movement and a new state.

From layers to glazes to lines, this journey is seen through Tiu’s tsunami of reds and whites that stubbornly tries to prove its existence against the background. Together her lines, spaces and colors continuously redirect our gaze from where we thought we should be going. This interruption forces us to traverse the remaining spaces of the canvas. We are introduced to areas where uniformity used to reside.

There is sheer terror in change. There is great pleasure in change. Two points that reside in a separate but undeniably connected states. Kadin Tiu is asking us to traverse the space between those two points.

All the works are done in oil on canvas. This is her 9th solo exhibition.
