Are You There Yet?
Pow Marin
5 October 2019
The question recalls the artist’s life years back as a young professional—it is one that his superior would often ask to check if he has already reported for duty. Then it became a lingering thought that confronted him amid the routine of an office job and pressures that go with the workplace. It led to a self-reflection: assessing where he stands in relation to common aspirations in life such as a successful career, comfortable life, fulfilling and meaningful existence. The state of confusion was a crucial turning point in his artistic journey as it was here that he took the bold step towards realizing his dream—by becoming a full-time artist.
In this exhibition, Pow Marin revisits that crossroad which is by no means unique—the same dilemma faced by many individuals in search of meaning and purpose, torn between pursuing passion and securing stability. The paintings serve as a diary of the days leading to his decision to embark on a new chapter in his life—waking up in his bedroom, daily commute, cigarette breaks, and feeling exhausted rendered in lifeless grays to capture the monotonous and uninspired moments. Crowding these scenes are his characteristic configurations of dots and circles reminiscent of a thriving underwater ecosystem and flowerbeds, this time in vivid reds that seem to prefigure the more colorful life promised by the dream one chases. The intense and festive hue may well indicate the burning desire to break free and follow one’s heart.
Now on another momentous occasion in his artistic career, his fourth solo show to date, it is timely and fitting that he asks the question once again, to reflect on the path he took in retrospect. He might not be there yet as more challenges and achievements await, but living every moment of the choice he made.
