The Time of the Flesh*

In Iggy Rodriguez’s Sovereign Pleasures, the body becomes a battlefield where private impulse confronts power, social hierarchy and accountability. Across paintings and pen and ink works, the artist dissects appetite, privilege, desire, anxiety, belief, and politics with the precision of a surgeon wielding a bristle and felt-tipped scalpel. His fleshy, exaggerated figures, reminiscent of rotund Renaissance subjects, are at once unnervingly beautiful and grotesque.

In Eden, Reserved, Baroque/broke bodies recline in unapologetic sensuality piled atop pedestals within a cathedral-like structure: an exclusive paradise claimed by the privileged few. The artist posits that pleasure feeds both the id, with its insatiable appetite for excessive consumption, and the ego, absorbed in its own complicit beauty. Yet beneath the indulgence lies fragility: the bodies coalesce into cloud-like shapes like discarded fast-fashion fabric, precariously piled on structures that still might collapse. The architecture evokes both places of worship and the chambers and branching networks of the human heart. Clogged. Access denied.

Into the New Eden shifts this pursuit of paradise toward the seductive promise of development, infrastructure, and modernity, where progress stands on the bodies of laborers who bear its psychological cost. In Static Gaze, societal anxiety overwhelms the mind until thought becomes signal interference, rendering a face suspended between attention and exhaustion, a red line approximating either a beacon or a bullet to the brain. Countenance in Bloom gives inherited history physical form, with layers of imposed narratives and desires cascading into tangled roots and spreading into blood vessels.

Anatomy of Apostasy sports headless putti traipsing through graceful scrollwork as a dark structure looms behind them, its symmetry and expanding angles turning pleasure into something unstable and potentially revolutionary. Wallow depicts a mind so immersed in its own lies that illusion becomes a permanent habitation, much like how Pinocchio’s nose extends impossibly to create its own convoluted cradle. In Luxury of Weight, a winged ball of fluffy flesh flounces and folds upon itself, immobilized by accumulated excess baggage, its capacity for flight rendered useless. Buoyancy counters this with a body rising against forces determined to hold it down. In Fragments, a body is split into control lines, where opposing impulses gnash against each other in an attempt to keep whole.

These tensions culminate in The Absence We Keep (I, II, III, IV), a meditation on wanting what remains beyond reach. Desire extends beyond possession toward the imagined possibility of a better life elsewhere, bodies anchored to layered geometric shapes giving space to what remains unseen. Sovereign Body confronts paradise from another position: a voluptuous figure holding a teacup appears locked out of heaven, though it remains unclear whether it is fleeing Eden or has simply been denied entry.

Rodriguez’ Asa series turns toward supplication, surrender, and the mystery of grace. Rendered in pen and ink and acrylic on cut-out Sintra board, its fiery reds accompany bodies that kneel, bend, pray, and wait. The title carries double meaning: in Tagalog, asa is gut-level conviction, a hope that what we desire remains possible; in Cebuano, it means “where.” Where to after this, and will we find what we seek there?

Throughout Sovereign Pleasures, Rodriguez deftly collapses the organic, psychological, and political in his precise interpretations of musculature and distended distortions through fine-lined scratches and cross-hatches. Rose petals meld into cerebral ridges and lopsided tumours; sinuous contortions recall intestines; roots and branches echo aortas and capillaries; unfurling chambers mimic atriums and ventricles. Brain, heart, muscle, fat, blood: the body becomes a map of visceral forces beneath the skin and across earthly existence. Collectively, the pieces turn pleasure into a question of power: who has the right to it, who defines what is desirable, and which desires are truly our own? Shaped by religion, colonialism, class, commerce, and culture, desire is never entirely separate from the fickle systems that produce and regulate it. Rodriguez asks where the pursuit of pleasure leads, and whether what we mistake for freedom can become another form of submission or calculated seduction. For the individual, mindless surrender to the comforts of the flesh risks transforming overly hedonistic pursuits into unmanageable anxiety, unfathomable costs, and profound numbness. For those who wield power, impunity, unaccountability, and ravenous greed become their own undoing.

Still, harder questions remain: how can pleasure and domination coexist, and what would it take for pleasure to become an act of freedom?
